I'm ALIVE!!!

Hey everyone,

I finally have the chance to update you on Salt! I apologize for this being so overdue!

The main update is that I have a new full time position as a Craft Designer at Hobby Lobby Corporate in Oklahoma City. This is by far, the most amazing job I've ever had!! I get paid to make adorable things all day with the sweetest people! I love everyone I work with and am so proud to work for such an honorable company.

That being said, Salt is not over. All of my dear supporters since the day Salt was conceived in November 2007 at Eden Salon, in addition to all of my closest friends and relatives, know that I have been working towards opening my own boutique for years now. There have been many obstacles and many things I've overcome and I feel like my very own brick and mortar will come to me only when I am completely ready and the timing is perfect. I don't know anyone that has done as much or more research than I have in starting my own business but pen and paper and continuous networking aren't all it takes.

I think this design opportunity came to me at the perfect time.

I still have my Salt booth at Plaza Java Marketplace on NW 16th and Blackwelder in OKC and am continuing to support other artists and my own handmade crafts. My Happy Place Design handmade goods are now available at datapanicdistro.com!!!

I have scaled back tremendously on Salt as to focus on my personal and professional life but all is not forgotten.

When the love of my life and myself are old and gray with grandchildren, maybe that's when we'll open a store together. Or maybe we'll open the store when we're early in our marriage so our children can enjoy it. All I can really know is that my heart will always ache to own my very own boutique, but now is not the time. I'm very lucky to be at this place in my life and I don't regret a thing.

I want to thank all of you for being so understanding and for your continued support.

I will be selling my handmade goods and artwork by Matt Cipov [Matty8080] at the LIVE on the Plaza event this Friday in front of Plaza Java.

New Blog!

Hello everyone! I decided to keep my personal design world [Happy Place Design] separate from my boutique world [Salt Boutique], so I created HappyPlaceDesign.blogspot.com. For now, I have HappyPlaceDesign.com forwarded to the Data Panic Distro shop that is being created for me. I might eventually forward it to the blog, but who knows. I just wanted to create a separate blog to post photos from the events I exhibit at and all of the flyers for the events I help organize. There is so much going on, that I wanted to make sure that the two weren't overlapping too much. Not everyone interested in Salt will be interested in Happy Place Design, and vice versa.

Also, I start my new job at the Hobby Lobby Corporate Office in two weeks as a Craft Designer! I think I'll have quite a bit to post after that job starts, especially since I'm already making so much! I'm sure I'll have a LOT to talk about... :)

PARIS (AP) — Yves Saint Laurent, one of the most influential and enduring designers of the 20th century, empowered women by reinventing pants as a sleek, elegant staple of the female wardrobe.
Saint Laurent, 71, died Sunday night at his Paris home after a yearlong battle with brain cancer, said Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent's close friend and business partner for four decades.
"Chanel gave women freedom," and Saint Laurent "gave them power," Berge said on France-Info radio. He called Saint Laurent a "true creator" who went beyond the aesthetic to make a social statement.

My entire collection from my senior year at college was based on the artwork of 1960's American Pop Artist, Roy Lichtenstein. I used red, white, blue, and yellow colorblocking with cotton jersey knits and black oversized rib knit piping. I did sleeveless tunics, puff sleeve tees, and mini skirts with blue and red fronts and black backs. I just found a dress that Yves Saint Laurent designed in 1965, that is very similar to the collection I developed in 2004. This is the first time I've seen this dress. I guess I was unconsciously channeling Yves Saint Laurent.

In May 2008, Dunkin' Donuts discontinued an online ad featuring Rachael Ray wearing a scarf after conservative columnists like Michelle Malkin claimed the scarf resembled a keffiyeh. Fox News stated in a report that it symbolizes Palestinian terrorists.

The keffiyeh is a traditional headdress of Arab men, made of a square of cloth ("scarf"), usually cotton, folded and wrapped in various styles around the head. It is commonly found in arid climate areas to provide protection from direct sun exposure, as well as for occasional use in protecting the mouth and eyes from blown dust and sand. Some wearers wrap the keffiyeh into a turban, while others wear it loosely draped around the back and shoulders. The Jordanian keffiyeh has cotton decorative strings on the sides. It is believed that the bigger these strings, the more value it has and the higher a person's status. It has been used by Bedouins throughout the centuries and was used as a symbol of honour and tribal identification.

In the 1960s, the keffiyeh became a symbol of Palestinian nationalism as a result of its association with rural areas (as opposed to the city-dweller's fez). Early on, he had made it his personal trademark to drape the scarf over his right shoulder only and arranging it in the rough shape of a triangle, so resembling the outlines of the territory claimed by Palestine.

This symbol of Palestinian identity is now largely imported from China, in 2008 Yasser Hirbawi who for five decades had been the only Palestinian manufacturer of keffiyehs told Reuters that "Two years ago I had to close down my factory because I couldn't compete with Chinese-made Hattas (keffiyehs) that sell for 40 percent less."

In 2007, the American clothing store chain, Urban Outfitters, stopped selling keffiyehs after "a pro-Israel activist ... complained about the items" and issued a statement that "the company had not intended 'to imply any sympathy for or support of terrorists or terrorism' in selling the keffiyehs and was pulling them."[

New Plaza Java Cafe Location!!!

We scored a new location this weekend inside the Plaza Java Cafe in the Plaza District in Oklahoma City!
The Cafe is closed on Sunday and Monday. I will update everyone on the exact hours but I believe they close at 7PM on weekdays and 3PM on Saturdays. The website is currently down for maintenance but you can check it later at plazajava.com. You can also check out their google map here.

Ryan and I are working on several new designs that will only be for sale at this location, including altered vintage apparel and accessories, artwork, and hand drawn and framed illustrations!

We're hoping to schedule art shows at this location as well. We can't wait for the Plaza Distrtict to blow up! It's such a great neighborhood.

I'm finally back in the mode of making clothes again. Getting a fashion design degree and working in the wholesale/design biz for about 7 years made me frown at the thought of patternmaking and spec sheets and more so made me want to explore other avenues like graphic design and illustration and give my rowdy plastic Kenmore sewing machine a break for a few years. Ever since a friend gave me a vintage Singer sewing machine a few months ago I've been inspired all over again. I feel that fresh urgency to create just like I did before I sold my soul to the mass market/industry devil. This movement for making things at home from pastries to pillows to wedding dresses, has reminded me where I started at and how far I've come. I'm ready to make apparel again and etsy is a huge inspiration. I went to the women's apparel category and I knew there was no turning back. Sometimes there are those bad DIY knockoff clothes and accessories at retailers that are trying to cop the trend but I like when retailers actually sell handmade or DIY pieces. It's even better when they sell them online. Even if a hundred little women in a hot factory are sewing these reconstructed t-shirts, they are still one of a kind and recycled. You can't win them all, but sometimes you can get close.

This Weekend in Dallas

I'm heading to Dallas with Ryan on Friday after work to meet up with my good friend Gina to paint the town pink!
We're hitting the usual shopping spots (Mockingbird Station, North Park Mall, West Village, etc.) Saturday day, meeting up with the lovelies I consign with and then checking out the House of Dang day party and Evan's Swiss House party and the Hands Up! party Saturday night.

The folks over at Rockport Publishers/Quarry Books asked us to spread the word about their call for entries. So gather your greetings and submit them to the 1000 Handmade Cards book project by Rockport Publishers/Quarry Books. The publishers are seeking beautiful examples of handmade greeting cards, and you could be included in the published work!

Eligible cards may be:
■ Watercolors, acrylics or any painted media
■ Block prints, silkscreens, or stamped cards
■ Drawing and calligraphy
■ Paper art and scrapbooking techniques
■ Photography
■ Hand-sewn or hand-stitched cards
■ Collage and mixed media, anything from paper, plastic, and fabric to natural and found objects
■ The sky’s the limit as long as it’s handmade!

This Past Week's Shows

Just an update on last week's shows that I attended:

Expression - Hip Hop Event @ Lit in Bricktown, OKC on Saturday, March 22nd
Dance Robots Dance @ Opolis in Norman on Thursday, March 27th
Creative Craft Show @ Cleveland County Fairgrounds in Norman on Saturday, March 29th

I didn't know what to expect at any of the three events, all of which are extremely different from each other. I loved the music at the hip hop show. Any chance to hear old school hip hop while setting up my booth, is a good night in my book. I don't think the attendees really knew what I was all about but a few people were really feeling the vintage dresses I was showing. A huge thanks to Ronnie Harris for getting me connected with selling at the event!

The Opolis dance party was one of the best times I've had in awhile.
I loved that it was an all ages, non-smoking event. My products weren't all smokey after I packed things up at the end of the night. It seemed like everyone was having a great time, not caring what anyone else thought. I love being around those types of people. I definitely plan to make it to another DRD dance party at Opolis soon!
A big thank you to Dylan and B. from DRD for allowing me to set up shop at their weekly event. I had a blast!

The Creative Craft show was quite a bit different than I expected.
There were several commercial booths selling items completely unrelated to the "Creative Craft" concept. I met some great people though from the Oklahoma City Etsy Street Team - The Disciples of Etsy and the Tulsa Craft Mafia. Events like the craft show, though sometimes unsuccessful, are great networking events. I don't regret going by any means.

Thank you to everyone that made it out to those events!
I hope to see everyone again at future events.
Next up in Oklahoma City... the Plaza District Opening Night/Walk on Friday, April 11th, the Punk Rock Garage Sale on Saturday, April 12th, and our Critter Art Show(those fun little plushy creature things!) Artist Reception and Workshop on Sunday, April 13th.

80's Graphics

Now that I'm back into sewing and designing for myself (versus for the "man", of course), I can't keep my eyes of the geometric prints I see everywhere. When I'm at a thrift store, it's the first thing I walk towards, whether it be rainbow triangles on a coffee mug, or a full print neon windsuit. I get so inspired by all the colors, shapes, and placement. The last couple of times I've been to market in Vegas, there has been an overwhelming response to the 80's trend. It's always nice to be around the creative energy at market. I've been putting all of this inspiration into my plush brooch collection for Happy Place Design. I'm getting into some fun t-shirt design projects, too. I can't wait to see where all of this energy leads to! I hope you keep checking back to see what new projects I'm working on. Here are some pieces that both inspire me, and totally crack me up!

Believe it or not, designs like these led me to my first brooch collection by Happy Place Design:

I think I'll keep posting my design inspiration. I like the ideas it gave me once I typed everything out and am able to look at it over and over again.
I have a goal of 100 pieces to take to the Creative Craft Show this Saturday in Norman, Oklahoma and I'm at 73 pieces (including my painted plaques, vintage earring magnets, mini fruit magnets, plushies, brooches, and pillows).

I will be at several events in the next few months in Texas and Oklahoma selling these wearable eye candies, so keep an eye out. Introducing Happy Place Brooches!

I hope everyone comes out tonight to our Recycled Arts Show at Rink Gallery from 6-8pm. Support artists that creatively recycle and show your support for Salt Boutique while you're at it! We'll most definitely have snacks and wine, don't you worry.

And... I'm showing my "Happy Place" brooches for the very first time! :)
I make them out of vintage materials and felt. I also have a plush collection but it isn't finished yet. All shapes and sizes are only $5 so get them now!

I'll post pictures next week of the ridiculously cute little things, but I wanted to get more people to come check them out first.

New Painted Furniture!!

Hey Everyone!
This weekend when I was visiting my grandpa, I went to a Swap Shop in a tiny town in Oklahoma and found this awesome furniture! I decided it was a great idea to paint the two pieces in my tiny garage apartment over the weekend and well... I don't know if I ended up getting the flu, or if I was just dizzy from all the fumes. Either way, here is how they both turned out. They are now at Rink Gallery for sale!!

If you're looking for any special type of furniture in any particular color, please let me know. I'll keep a look out and custom paint it for you.

Late Valentine's Day Post

So I realize that Valentine's day was over ten days ago... but I hadn't gotten the chance to brag about my gift yet. Here are pictures of what Ryan made me. He handmade a dozen fortune cookies from red and pink felt with little love messages inside each one. He also brought a lovely bottle of champagne and chinese takeout from our favorite restaraunt! Yummy vegetable delight with fried tofu and sweet and sour sauce!! I'll also show you a lovely picture of the smore cookies I made him with robots drawn in icing. They weren't so yummy I don't think... but it's not my fault! My tiny little prehistoric oven doesn't have a temperature gauge.. They were inspired by the robot image below that I found on some website...

I know it's a late wish, but I hope everyone else had a lovely Valentine's Day!
